If you’ve been hoping for snow, then you might be getting more than you bargained for.
Storm Warnings For B.C.
Environment Canada has two B.C. locations listed as under a winter storm warning, including one in Pine Pass being noted as an Orange Warning, as well as Highway 3 (mainly near Kootenay pass) as a Yellow Warning. Just recently, Environment and Climate Change Canada introduced a new, colour-coded weather alert system that allows Canadians to understand the severity of a warning with just a glance. Orange alerts are issued only when significant damage, disruption, or health impacts are expected from severe weather– just like the one in Pine Pass.
The winter storm warning is expected to remain from now through Tuesday morning as “hazardous winter conditions continue.” An accumulation of 30 to 40cm of snow is expected, with “near zero visibilities in blowing snow.” Snowfall at Highway 3 will be lower, at around 25cm.
The storm is due to a “strong Pacific frontal system” that will be moving across the B.C. central interior, bringing heavy snow to Highway 97 through the Pine Pass. Another frontal system will bring an additional round of snow starting on Tuesday.
Travel and mountain conditions will be hazardous. Environment Canada recommends allowing extra time for travel, as well as using winter tires and chains when driving in winter weather.
Further Snowfall In B.C.
Other parts of B.C. are under a general snowfall warning, with varying levels of snow expected to pile up throughout today and tonight. Certain regions will experience only 10 to 15cm, while others may accumulate up to 25cm.

Travel is expected to be challenging, with reduced visibility through the snow. Motorists are advised to prepare for quickly-changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Allowing extra time for travel is also recommended.
Here are all the locations under a snowfall warning:
- B.C. North Peace River
- B.C. South Peace River
- Fort Nelson
- North Coast – inland including Stewart
- Williston
- Yoho Park – Kootenay Park
