This Road Trip Was Just Named The Best In Canada

by Amy Huang |

No matter which province you’re driving through, you’ll always find something gorgeous to admire out the window as you pass by forestsmountains, and lakes.

For one road trip route, it received a spotlight in the U.S. travel magazine Travel + Leisure as one of the best summer road trips in Canada that features “some of the most beautiful views” in the country.

FROM CALGARY TO JASPER

The road from Calgary to Jasper closes in the winter months, so Travel + Leisure notes that this makes it a “rare and exclusive experience in the summer months.”

Not only that, but the sights and adventures you can have along the way are the kinds you can only have on this road. Explore wildlifemountain and lake views, and enjoy all the natural scenery that Alberta has to offer.

This is an especially good time for Canadians to travel domestically as the Canada Strong Pass offers perks that can make your road trip super cheap, with plenty of free experiences to go around.

Here’s the full route, so you can start planning your road trip right hereright now.

STARTING POINT: CALGARY

Your itinerary begins in Calgary, with Travel + Leisure recommending you hit up Canada Olympic Park as your first stop before you hit the road. “Explore the venue, go mountain biking, or play a round of miniature golf in the same spaces where the world’s best athletes competed.” You can also try Downhill Karting!

BANFF NATIONAL PARK

Next, you’ll hop onto the winding road and head to Banff National Park. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the unexpected, as wildlife is always popping up along the drive there. Maybe you’ll spot an eagle, or perhaps a moose– you never know! When you reach Banff National Park, there will be plenty more sightseeing to do, as well as biking.

DRIVE ALONG ICEFIELDS PARKWAY

As you continue your drive on Icefields Parkway, you’ll eventually come upon Bow Lake, as well as Waterfowl Lakes. These pretty lakes will look like blue-green gemstones as they reflect the clear sky above (if the weather is nice, of course) and the snow-capped mountains.

Travel + Leisure also recommends campers and hikers to pitch their tents at Waterfowl Lakes Campground if they want to stay longer to soak in those good natural vibes.

FINAL STOP: JASPER NATIONAL PARK

Finally, you’ll pull into Jasper National Park, along with many others “who make their way this far north… in search of the road’s claim to fame– the 300-foot-deep ice field that’s predicted to melt away within the next 40 to 60 years.” This ice field is known as the Columbia Icefield and Athabasca Glacier, which “are best visited on board an all-terrain Ice Explorer with naturalists.”

Other things to see and do at Jasper National Park are heading to the Columbia Icefield Skywalk, where it looks like you’re walking on thin air. A glass platform, you’ll be standing 918 feet above the Sunwapta Valley.

And don’t forget to honour the First Nations people whose lands Canada resides on. View Spirit Island with a Maligne Lake cruise. Spirit Island is an “Indigenous-only, centuries-old peninsula”, and with a guide narrating your cruise, you’ll definitely gain an appreciation for the history that these lands before time contain.
